Who we are

Rooted in nature, driven by hope — growing a greener, wilder Ireland for everyone to share

What we're here to do

Our mission & dream

We’re making it easy and affordable for everyone to help rewild Ireland — by planting native trees, restoring biodiversity, and backing grassroots projects across the country.

We dream of an island alive with native forests, birdsong, bees, clean rivers, and wildflowers — a place where nature thrives and people feel proud to protect it. We’re a small but mighty team, mostly volunteers, working with local groups and everyday nature-lovers to build a movement that brings Ireland’s wild places back to life.

are different

  • Our forests aren’t your typical straight-line plantations. We plant native Irish trees in a natural way that encourages competition and collaboration — so they grow together as one resilient ecosystem, not just as individual trees.

We call it ecologically optimised planting.

The results speak for themselves: forests that grow up to 10x faster, absorb 10x more carbon, support up to 100x more biodiversity — and boast higher survival rates too.

Every tree you plant with Reforest Nation helps bring back the wild, thriving landscapes Ireland once knew — and the world urgently needs.

  • We believe planting trees should be about restoring nature — not stretching wallets. While some Irish organisations charge €25–€150 for a single tree, we keep it simple and honest:

    • Plant 3 trees for €25

    • Plant 100 trees for €299

    • Businesses? Just €1.99 per tree — the best value in Europe

And we don’t cut corners. Every tree you plant helps grow rich, living forests filled with up to 27 native species — the widest variety in Ireland.

We plant certified native Irish trees, grown right here in Ireland. No seedlings or sapling shortcuts — just strong, sturdy two-year-old trees, from 50cm up to 2 metres tall. Ready to thrive, not just survive.

Because not all trees are created equal — and neither are the people planting them.

  • We’ve already planted over one million trees — a first for any Irish tree-planting initiative — and this is just the beginning.

Our next bold step? 10 million trees by 2030.

When you plant with us, you’re joining a movement that’s getting bigger, faster, and greener every day.

  • Our commitment doesn’t stop at Ireland’s borders.

We’ve already helped plant almost a million trees in Madagascar, restoring critical mangrove forests that absorb carbon like sponges.

Now, we’re planting millions of trees every year with Seedballs Kenya — a groundbreaking project featured by David Attenborough himself.

By planting here, you’re making a real, tangible difference everywhere.

  • We believe real transparency means seeing it for yourself.

With Reforest Nation, you can visit the forests you’ve helped plant, walk among the trees, and watch them grow and thrive over time.

Each year, we also host a public tree planting day — so if you’d like, you can even join us and plant some trees yourself.

Plus, members receive regular photo and video updates to stay connected to the forests they’re helping bring back to life.

It’s a connection you can see, feel, and be proud of — the kind of transparency no spreadsheet can match.

Our story

Hi, I’m Gearóid, the founder of Reforest Nation.

Nature’s been part of my story for as long as I can remember.

As a kid, I lived for wildlife documentaries — imagining endless forests, wild rivers, untouched landscapes. For a while, I truly believed the world looked like that.

Then I got older.

I started looking closer — and what I saw broke my heart.

I’ll never forget the first time I zoomed in on the Amazon using Google Maps.

Where I expected oceans of green, I found scars — roads, bare patches, missing forests.

It hit me hard.

The planet wasn’t thriving. It was under threat.

And for a while, that knowledge left me feeling anxious and powerless.

But then, a promise began to form which brought me peace and a sense of purpose:

I told my 12 year old self, “one day, you’ll do something about it”.

Not just worry. Not just watch. Act.

When the pandemic hit, that promise came calling.

Like a lot of people, I was stuck indoors, looking for something meaningful to do — something that could pass the time and make a real difference.

So I asked myself:

If I could get really good at just one thing to help the planet, what should it be?

The answer was simple: trees.

Because trees don’t just stand there looking pretty (though they’re great at that too).

They rebuild ecosystems, shelter wildlife, store carbon, and stitch the world back together — quietly, steadily, stubbornly.

So I got to work.

No big teams. No big budgets. Just a few of us — friends, family, volunteers — planting trees one by one across Ireland’s bare fields and forgotten corners.

It wasn’t easy.

The first year, half the trees didn’t survive.

We faced droughts, mistakes, doubts.

But we kept going.

Because if you wait until you’re perfect, you’ll never start.

And if you start, you get better.

Today, Reforest Nation has grown into Ireland’s biggest movement to bring native forests back to every county.

We’ve planted over one million native trees — the largest native planting effort in Irish history — and we’re just getting started.

We’re now on track to plant ten million trees by 2030, working one tree, one field, one forest at a time. We’re proudly not-for-profit.

We’re run by a small team with big hearts.

And we believe change doesn’t happen by accident — it happens when lots of small seeds are planted with hope, patience, and a little bit of stubbornness.

This is just the beginning.

We’re here to help nature heal — one tree, one field, one forest at a time.

And we’d love you to be part of it.

FAQ’s

  • We believe proof should be part of the promise. That’s why every tree we plant comes with GPS coordinates, seasonal photo and video updates, and even the option to visit the site. We also give out free trees through schools, communities, and local groups — because planting forests should be something everyone can be part of. If we say it’s planted, it’s planted. And you’re welcome to see for yourself.

  • Because the climate and biodiversity crisis doesn’t stop at the coastline. For every tree we plant here in Ireland, we also fund a native tree abroad — in places like Kenya where fast, low-cost reforestation helps restore ecosystems and livelihoods. It’s a simple one-for-one model that lets your support stretch even further, both locally and globally.

  • Fair question. But no — this isn’t about looking good. It’s about doing good. We plant only native species, never monocultures, and we monitor every forest for the long haul. We’re upfront about costs, open with impact data, and committed to doing this the right way — not the fastest or cheapest. It’s reforestation with roots.

  • Not quite — and for good reason. We’re a not-for-profit social enterprise, which means every euro goes straight back into reforestation, biodiversity, and environmental restoration. We keep things lean, transparent, and impact-driven. No shareholders. No fluff. Just a team obsessed with getting native trees in the ground and protecting Ireland’s wild places.

  • You absolutely can. Every tree you plant helps cool the planet, bring back wildlife, and restore the ecosystems we’ve lost. But we’re not stopping at trees. Each year, we also support 20+ Irish environmental charities — from bog restoration to curlew conservation — because rewilding Ireland means more than just forests. It means protecting everything that calls this land home.

  • Great trees aren’t cheap — and cheap trees aren’t great. We work with trusted Irish nurseries, pay fair wages, and design forests that last generations. But we also give out thousands of free trees to schools, farmers, and local initiatives. When you pay to plant a tree, you’re helping us do both — fund high-quality reforestation and make it accessible to communities across the country.
