Irish Peatland Conservation Council

Our partner dedicated to conserving Ireland’s peatlands and their biodiversity.

What they do

The Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC) is a national charitable organisation established in 1982 to conserve and protect a representative sample of bogs in Ireland. Their mission includes:

  • Habitat Conservation: Protecting and managing peatland reserves to preserve their ecological integrity.

  • Education and Awareness: Operating the Bog of Allen Nature Centre to educate the public about peatland ecosystems.

  • Advocacy: Campaigning on bog-related issues to influence environmental policies.

Through these efforts, the IPCC plays a crucial role in safeguarding Ireland’s unique peatland habitats.

Why Bog Conservation Is Important

Peatlands are vital ecosystems that support a rich diversity of plant and animal life. They act as significant carbon sinks, helping to mitigate climate change by storing carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Additionally, peatlands play a role in water regulation, maintaining water quality, and providing unique recreational and educational opportunities. However, peatlands face threats from drainage, peat extraction, and land-use changes, making their conservation essential for environmental health and biodiversity.

How we Help

Reforest Nation is proud to support the Irish Peatland Conservation Council in their mission to protect Ireland’s peatlands. Thanks to the support of our Rewild Members, we’ve donated €1,000 to assist their vital work. This contribution aids in:

  • Restoring degraded peatland habitats, enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services.

  • Supporting educational programmes at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre, raising public awareness about the importance of peatlands.

  • Advocating for peatland conservation policies, ensuring long-term protection of these critical ecosystems.

Together, we are working towards a future where Ireland’s peatlands are preserved and cherished for generations to come.
