Irish basking shark group

Our partner dedicated to the research, & conservation of Ireland’s basking sharks.

What they do

The Irish Basking Shark Group (IBSG) is a non-profit organisation committed to promoting sustainable research, education, and conservation of basking sharks in Irish waters. Their initiatives include:

  • Research: Conducting studies to understand basking shark behaviour, distribution, and ecology.

  • Education: Raising public awareness about the importance of basking sharks and marine conservation.

  • Conservation: Advocating for policies to protect basking sharks and their habitats.

By integrating scientific research with community engagement, IBSG plays a crucial role in safeguarding these gentle giants.

Why Restoring Atlantic rainforest Is Important

Basking sharks are the second-largest fish in the world and are vital indicators of ocean health. Despite their size, they are gentle filter-feeders, primarily consuming plankton. However, they face threats from bycatch, vessel strikes, and habitat degradation. Protecting basking sharks helps maintain marine biodiversity and ensures the stability of ocean ecosystems.

How we Help

Reforest Nation is proud to support the Irish Basking Shark Group in their efforts to conserve these gentle giants. Thanks to the support of our Rewild Members, we’ve donated €1,000 to assist their important work.

This contribution helps by:

  • Supporting research to monitor basking shark populations and understand their behaviours.

  • Funding education programmes to inform communities about the importance of marine conservation.

  • Promoting policies to protect basking sharks and their habitats in Irish waters.

Together, we’re helping to ensure a thriving future for basking sharks and a healthier marine environment in Ireland.
