Coomhola salmon trust

Our partner conserving Ireland’s freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity.

What they do

Coomhola Salmon Trust is a non-profit organisation committed to protecting Ireland’s freshwater habitats and species. Their work includes:

  • Developing and delivering the StreamScapes Aquatic & Biodiversity Education Programme since 1989, engaging communities and schools across Ireland and internationally.

  • Hosting important freshwater biology research projects, contributing to the understanding and preservation of aquatic life.

  • Advocating for integrated catchment management approaches to support the implementation of the Water Framework Directive.

By collaborating with local communities, educational institutions, and environmental agencies, Coomhola Salmon Trust plays a vital role in conserving Ireland’s freshwater biodiversity.

Why Freshwater Ecosystems Are Important

reshwater ecosystems are crucial for maintaining biodiversity, providing habitats for a wide range of species, including the Atlantic salmon. They offer essential services such as water purification, flood regulation, and support for recreational activities. Healthy freshwater systems are indicators of overall environmental health and are vital for human well-being. Protecting these ecosystems ensures the survival of species that depend on them and maintains the ecological balance necessary for a sustainable environment.

How we Help

Reforest Nation is proud to support Coomhola Salmon Trust in its efforts to conserve Ireland’s freshwater habitats. With the help of our Rewild Members, we’ve donated €1,000 to assist their important work.

This contribution makes a difference by:

  • Supporting the StreamScapes programme, which educates communities about the importance of aquatic and biodiversity conservation.

  • Funding freshwater biology research projects that inform conservation strategies and policies.

  • Promoting sustainable catchment management practices to improve water quality and ecosystem health.

Together, we are working towards a future where Ireland’s freshwater ecosystems thrive, ensuring a healthy environment for all.
